Describe the moment you decided it was time to pursue this as a career?
Before my daughter was born I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life. I had always been someone who took tons of photographs. After her birth I became nuts about scrapbooking and photography, from there I took online classes, joined forums and just couldn’t get enough. In June 2004 I was able to make my dream a reality, shooting my first wedding. From that I have never looked back, and today I have been privilaged to work with so many great people!

18-135mm f/6.3

What is one thing you’ve learned so far that has proven most valuable?
Keeping faith in myself, don’t compare myself to everyone and believe my work is second best, as for those I work with treat everyone as your closest friends., and I will always believe that I am a mommy, wife and then a photographer!

What makes you different from everyone else?
I put my whole heart into my work by being myself.

18-135mm f/8

Who is your one favorite up-and-coming photographer?
There are so many great ones, but I would have to say I love the work of Stacey Rainer.

One item you can’t live without?
I absolutely love my D80, I don’t know how I shot without it!

Your favorite bokeh image?

18-135mm f/5.6

Why did you want to be included on The Bokeh Pot?
I love looking at other photographers work and networking is always a plus. Hopefully I can inspire others with my work to pursue their dreams!

Favorite book?
Honestly I have a couple, One is the Killer Angels and the other is God and Generals. I am a huge Civil War enthusist.

18-135 mm f/5.6

Favorite movie?
I have two that tie for first – Braveheart and Gettysburg.

Where do you find inspiration?
My family is my true inspiration., Without my husband and children I don’t believe I would be where I am now.

18-135mm f/5.6

What do you think is the most valuable aspect of your business?
For me it would be the friendship of clients I have made.

Do you use a second shooter?
There are some sessions that yes I have used a second shooter for such as larger weddings.

18-135mm f/6.3

How would you recommend that someone wanting to second shoot with you go about getting the gig?
For me when I am looking for a second shooter I want to know their inspiration to shoot, what they are looking for in the photography field and of course I want to meet and see their work, I always want to see if the second shooter and I have a good chemistry.

If you could second shoot with anyone, who would it be?
I would love to work with some of the photographers that I have become friends with over the years. – One is Andrea from www.andreabrownphotography.com and Didi from www.dididaniellephoto.com

18-135mm f/10

Are you a member of any organizations and have you won any awards?
I am an active member of a wonderful organization called Americorps and the Ms. Wheelchair Virginia Organization which I am the webmaster and photographer for, as well as Think Pink Photography

What did you have to do to actually take the leap? Did you have any hoops to jump through?

For me it was more of getting my nerve up enough to do it., I am constantly driving to make my work even better. I feel like I haven’t jumped through enough yet. There is always something that I am needing to get through.

18-135mm f/5.6

Do you have suggestions for others trying to make the transition?
Spend as much time as you can online looking through forums, don’t pass up any chances you have to learn!

What is the biggest or most creative thing you do/have done to draw new clients?
I have a lot of clients who have found me through word of mouth, event planners or even my ads through craigslist. I don’t advertise really otherwise than that., Once my children are big enough, I plan on throwing myself completely into working full time.

Are you for or against advertising (paid or free)? If for, who have you had the most success with?
I am for both paid and free, the most success I have had is craigslist., the funny thing is the majority of my work has been from there.

18-135mm f/5.6

What’s your idea of the perfect photographer networking “date”?

I would love to do a group “high school senior” session, that way we can learn techniques and new ideas from each other!

Anything else you would like to share?
Thank you for the opportunity to share my work!

some more photos!

These are some other photographs I have taken over the past few months. - some of my favorites, but of course I have tons of favorites! You know one of the best things I get to do is come up with different angles, styles, and express my own creativity! If it was not for the great people I have worked with I wouldn't be where I am today!

Gail and Charlie - sneak peak!

Gail and Charlie got married on June 27, 2009 in a beautiful location in Fairfax Virginia! I met the couple a few weeks before the wedding day, from that moment you could tell how in love they were! They are a perfect fit. Both have this loving, caring side and then there is also this wacky side!

It was a wedding had so many different angles - I could not believe how many little details there were to capture! It was the biggest family affair that I have shot to date!

I have to thank Gail and Charlie for being so easy to work with., and allowing me to capture their memories of the day!

Here is a sneak peak of a few photos. More can be viewed on my website!

Deanna and Brian: February 21, 2009

I started this year off early normally I start shooting weddings in April, however this year I shot my first in February. They called me at the last minute to shoot the day. The bride had a beautiful teal dress., which of course is her favorite color.

The wedding cake, there is never one that looks the same. I love walking into the reception and seeing the style that the couple chose.

I must say one of the highlights of my day was watching all of the family have a great time! Thanks Deanna and Brian for allowing me to be part of your day!

Happy New Year 2009

Wow what a year 2008 was for us! We were constantly busy! It all started in April with the marriage of my cousin, then the Ms. Wheelchair VA pageant, and wedding after wedding to follow. I really enjoyed working with all the great people who allowed me to be part of their special days! Some of those of which I have become great friends with., and look forward to working with again in the future!

May through the end of November were crazy. July however was a brief break for me, meanwhile in August I had 3 weddings within 8 days, and I honestly don't know how I made it through. October was a very special month for me as my little brother married his soul mate Sara. They have a beautiful little girl named Kali. November 22, 2008 was my last wedding of the year and I have just finished uploading those photographs to my website.

There are some special people I would like to thank for making this year such a success.

Casey and Sheree were just a great couple to work with.,I met with them in the first of the year, we sat down and decided on what package, which followed with engagement and bridal photographs and then their beautiful wedding on May 10. I have to thank Carol and Wayne for all they have done, including allowing me to photograph their daughter Carter's wedding to Matt in November. Their entire family has been such a blessing!

Erica and Jasper thank you so much for all the support you have given me over the past months. I truly hope you love the coffee table book! I look forward to spending time with you in the future. Also thank you so much for referring me to Alaina and Zach! You have really believed in me and for that I will always be greatful!

Stephanie and James came to me through a couple that I worked with in 2007 Laura and Scott. They were both great couples to work with! Its great to have couples that are so flexible and go with the flow!

In April I did a bridal session with Jennifer. She was wonderful and in June she married Matt. Their special day took place in Roanoke. The day started off sunny and then it ended up raining- POURING the rain about the time I was going to take the formal shots on the golf course. Well off to plan B I took all of the formal shots inside the church which turned out beautiful!! She was a referral from a friend that I went to elementary school with.

Between May and June I had both my kids birthdays along with my husband- needless to say it was a little busy!

July was a break for me however there was editing and ordering to do! Off to August, as I said above I shot 3 weddings in 8 days. I shot Jennifer and Travis's wedding at a beautiful location in Great Falls Virginia on August 2. The location was the home of Travis' parents. It was the perfect setting for an elegant backyard wedding.

On August 10 I shot the wedding of Jamie and Keshon in downtown DC. They had such a romantic wedding. I had been working with Jamie for over a year on her wedding day. The wedding was originially scheduled for August 2007 but however due to cercomstances it was the following August. Jamie was such an easy person to work with and is very details, however she allowed me to do my own thing and capture the day as I saw fit. I am sure I will be working with her again soon!

The day of Cari and Brian was filled with joy. Colors were the main detail in this wedding. All I can say is they were beautiful. Cari was a blushing bride walking down the alise to the gizibo where underneither she wed the man of her dreams. They came to me through a wedding planner named Autumn in the Roanoke area. She was such a joy to work with as well. The day could not have been better.

September came with a class reunion of Stuarts Draft High School class of 1998. I really enjoyed seeing people that I had went to school with, however I had graduated the year before. All I can say is we had a great time!! Thanks class of 98! In September I also shot the bridal portraits of Ashley. She was a referral from Jennifer. They were both in each others weddings as maids of honor. Ashley and Matt were married on October 25 at a beautiful lodge in Roanoke. It was a fall like day and the scene was breath taking.

October as I said above was a very special month for me as I shot my brothers special day on October 4. Evan and Sara were high school sweethearts whom had lost their way and finally found their way back together forever. They have a beautiful daughter who is the light of their eye. The theme of the wedding was black and white and the bride was stunning, and I'm not just saying that because she is my sister in law lol. The day could have not any better! On October 12 I made my way back up to Great Falls and shot the wedding of Heather and Tommy in the Great Falls National Park. It was a scene you all just need to see for yourself. The falls are beautiful! So... take a trip!

November brought the weddings of Kym and Alvin on November 9 in DC and also Carter and Matt on November 15. Kym and Alvin were so easy to work with. Their reception... well I can tell you I haven't seen a reception of guests have so much fun. There was tons of dancing, laughing and food! We all had a great time and I hope to work with them again soon. Carter and Matt were so easy going., I try my best to be a photographer that cares for their clients and can blend in with family. Carter and Matt were no exception, their wedding was really the joining of two best friends. Their day was so perfect, everything went off just the way it was ment to be. November ended with the vows of Alaina and Matt, their day was spent in the beautiful Morrison-Clark Historic Inn and Resturant. The location was built in 1864 and is just of Massachusettes Aveune in downtown DC. I have to say the setting was perfect. Alaina was 8 months pregnant at the time and was a beautiful bride, and mom to be.

So in a nutshell that was my year, 14 weddings, 2 bridal sessions, a high school reunion, portrait sessions and a pageant. I just hope that 2009 will be as much, and I will be able to work with wonderful people! For more of my work and to see more photographs please visit my website!
